The expected rain did not detract from Covides Wineyards – Winerie’s 60th anniversary event, which took place this Friday evening, January 19, 2024, at its facilities in Vilafranca del Penedès. The event, aimed mainly at members and workers of the cooperative, was attended by the mayor of Vilafranca del Penedès, Francisco Romero, along with institutional representatives and the wine sector of the region. During the event, a documentary that reviews the history of Covides was presented and the 60/30, a wine made to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the winery, was tasted.
Covides, a pioneer cooperative in the Penedès and in Spain
Covides Wineyards – Wineries is a wine cooperative founded on January 19, 1964, with a constituent assembly, held at Cal Bolet in Vilafranca del Penedès, and for this reason we wanted to celebrate the commemoration on exactly the same day and in the same town, but in this case in the winery of Vilafranca. At the beginning of the event, Rafel Ramon, president of Covides, welcomed all the attendees by reviewing the history of the winery. Ramon highlighted the pioneering spirit of Covides as a cooperative in the whole state and emphasized the importance of having launched a wine project like this in the Penedès: “Covides was born from the illusion of a group of farmers with the purpose of changing the situation of the winegrowers of the Penedès and improve their living conditions”. In his speech he also thanked all the people who have worked to make Covides what it is today and ended the speech with the challenges for the future: “to continue growing in bottling and quality, diversify our business and maintain good relations with companies in the sector”.
60 years of cooperativism made wine
During the event the wine 60/30 was presented and tasted. Made in the Experimental Cellar of Covides, it is a white wine DO Penedès that was born as a tribute to all the partners and people who have worked and work in Covides in these 6 decades. With a blend of Xarel-lo and Parellada, the grapes come from 30 vineyards of more than 60 years of different members of the cooperative, and as a curiosity some of the names of these vineyards can be read on the label of the wine.
A 30-minute documentary to show the spirit of Covides During the event, the documentary on which the winery has been working for two years was also presented. An audiovisual, 30 minutes long, which reviews the history of Covides, highlighting its most important moments and with the presence of more than twenty partners and workers.
